Dark matter is something that scientists who study astrophysics tend to believe in, even though there’s no direct evidence for it! (That’s an interesting thought!) Scientists can see some of the stuff that’s in space by looking through various types of telescopes, but we they add up all they can see, there isn’t enough to give the required gravity. They therefore think there must be stuff they can’t see that is also contributing to gravity. Because they haven’t been able to find any way yet of seeing it, they call it “dark matter”. (For more detail, best to look on Wikipedia to start with.)
