• Question: what do you think about horse meat being in beef products and have you tested on any of the meat what has had horse meat in?

      There is actually nothing wrong with horse as a source of meat – the French eat it quite a lot. The problem with the horsemeat scandal was that people didn’t know what was in those products and therefore what they were eating. Also, some people are quite affectionate towards horses, and don’t like the idea that they might have eaten them. It also makes you worry about what else you might have eaten that you don’t know about. I haven’t been involved in any of the testing myself.

      I don’t think there should be horse meat in a product if it is described as containing beef. That is deception.
      I haven’t been involved in any of the tests for horse meat, but one of our PhD students who is a vet has been very busy recently!
