I like the fact that most days i go home knowing something I didnt know when I went to work.
I also like all of the interesting people I get to meet from all over the world and all the cool equipment I get to play with

Being independant! Especially compared to school I choose what I want to do and how to do it (as long as it done in a good scientifc way of course 😉 ) My boss is mainly helping me to improve my work and doesn’t tell me what to do step by step. However, it mean you need to be very responsible!
The other thing of course is making cheese! It’s a great feeling to be able to eat what you have made, share it with your firends and now it will also help others to make more/better cheese!

As Julie says, freedom and independence to do what I want – scientists often have a lot of freedom, particularly in academia. For example, I decided I wanted to organise a conference on Bubbles in Food and turn it into a book, and I didn’t have to ask anyone, I just went ahead and did it. Similarly, I decided I wanted to study wheat milling, because I thought of an interesting new way of understanding it, and I didn’t have to ask anyone – I submitted a proposal, got some funding and went ahead and did it.

There are so many things. As the others have said, the finding things out every day, the ability to choose what I do each day and the people you meet and places you get to go to as part of the job. Also the joy of teaching people about science and the work I do. And of course answering questions from people like you! 🙂
