I did a careers event last night, so I got to talk to lots of aspiring scientists and answer their questions and give a bit of advice. What I tell them is to go for it!

Do science GCSEs and A levels and then a degree and then decide what you want to do. Above all enjoy all aspects of science, the 3 subjects that are taught biology, chemistry and physics are all linked and relate to each other.

Science is about answering the questions we ask about the world, the universe and how things work. So as long a people keep asking there will be a need for scientists to keep answering.

I would advise them to study the sciences at school and at university, obviously, to get a good foundation – then I would advise them always to strive to be unique – to do things nobody else is doing, in a way that is unique to them. In fact, this is what I do when I supervise PhD students (who are basically aspiring scientists) – I tell them to strive to come up with ideas that are uniquely theirs.

Get good basics as advise by Duncan and Grant and then be creative and different in your way of thinking so you can discover new things!
