not so much my teachers at school but the lecturers and professors who taught me at university did. I thought what some of them were doing was fascinating and wanted to do it myself.

Absolutely! Before O level (the old GCSEs) I hated biology because I hated the teacher. Then I got a really cool biology teacher and I loved the subject and it became my best. At university I did a research project with a young enthusiastic Professor who showed me what research was about and fired me up to continue. Equally there have been bad teachers and lecturers who have put me off certain areas.

I had a French teacher who also ran the debating society, and I got involved in debating. When I started my knees knocked together so loudly you could not hear me speak! I was a very poor speaker – not a natural at all. But I persisted over my school years, with this teacher’s patient support, and became acceptably good – never great, but adequate. Now, to my surprise, I am a university lecturer and surprisingly good at it! But I think back and realise that if it hadn’t been for that teacher, I would never have developed confidence in public speaking, which has led directly to my current career.

Yes, at school I first had a very bad teacher in chemistry and was not good at all then I had a great one which even if I found him annoying at the time always push me to work harder ( He told me to never let my personnal problem ruin my work, which I will never forget). Still decided not to study chemistry but agricultural business management because I thought it would be more useful. However for my last year project I had to use chemistry and business knowledge toghether and realize that it was what I wanted to do after.
