Yes, if you are buried by it. All too frequently there are reports of children digging large holes at the beach, then the hole collapsing and burying them such that they suffocate before they can be rescued. The problem is that dry sand is very hard to dig out because it flows back in faster than you can dig it out.
The same is true of wheat – if you fall into a silo of wheat, you are likely to sink into it and suffocate.
