Somebody came to my school when I was in my final year and talked about food science – I have no idea what his name was, but he was the one who made me think food science could be interesting. When we do such things – give a talk at a school or wherever – we have no idea whose life we might be changing. I’m sure he would be amazed to hear that because he gave that talk, I am now online participating in this Food Science zone!

There wasn’t one person who inspired me to become a scientist. I’ve always been interested in science and this interest was supported by several good science teachers at school. When I was at university I met and was taught by lots of research scientists and by working with them I found out how much I enjoyed research.

I go into schools to talk about science and the work I do. I hope that some of the children I meet will be inspired to follow their interest in science and become scientists of the future.

I actually chose science because I wanted to be rebellious and study the one subject that my parents didn’t study! Now I am so glad that I did because I love science!

To be fair it was never a dream, I wanted to do something I thought made a more direct difference to the life of others so was preparing to become a agricultural adviser. However in my final year of my degree I did a project looking at how policy impact the quality of Reblochon cheese and manage to show the policy was good not only for farmers but also for consumers by making a tastier and healthier cheese. It make me realize that by using science I could make thing change by proving I was right. Sure that one day it will also prove I am wrong but that is the fun in science 😉
So was not somebody who inspired me but an experience.
