• Question: Hi I am Rahil, if food scientists are responsible for developing safe, nutritious foods that we all take for granted each day so a lot of our food supply is dependent on lots of nations trading with each other as some food can only be produced in some countries. Yet around the world there are still hungry people and worldwide over 900 million people are malnourished. Do you know what are they doing to help everyone get some food.

Farmers grow the food, food scientists help to turn the relatively few things that farmers grow into the wide range of foods that give variety and interest to our lives. The problem of the global food supply is one of agricultural production, not so much food science, and of distribution – the world (currently) produces plenty of food, the problem is distribution. The other problem is of course obesity – many of us eat too much food, while others in the world go hungry, and in so doing are contributing unnecessarily to climate change and to healthcare costs. If you want to do your bit for world hunger and for climate change, as well as for your own health, don’t overeat.

Totally agree with Grant, one of the problem is also economical a lot of developing country used land to produce food for us (Banana, coffee, cocoa..) but then don’t have enough to eat themselves because it make more money exporting than producing for their own people. This will only change if responsibility-morality go before money (or together I am not that optimistic 😉 )
