The danger of GM food, such as it is, is not eating it. It’s the possible effects of GM crops on global agriculture and economics – the ability of nations to grow and/or afford enough food for their people. Thus the main issues of GM food are not actually scientific – they are political and economic. I have no strong objection to eating GM food – yes, there may be dangers of something poisonous being in there that shouldn’t, but that is true of other foods as well. I do have concerns over how GM crops could compromise the robustness and security of the global food supply, through two effects: (i) reducing the range of crops that are planted and hence their resistance to disease; and (ii) increasing the control of a few companies over the food supply. This is a very brief answer to a big issue, but those are the main concerns in my view.
